The thyroid gland
The thyroid produces the vital hormones T3 and T4. Normal thyroid function is important as it controls many metabolic processes throughout the body. Thyroid diseases have increased in frequency in recent years and can trigger a wide range of complaints. In particular, an underactive thyroid - usually triggered by a chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland (also called chronic immune thyroiditis or Hashimoto's disease) - can significantly affect the general well-being. Typical symptoms of hypothyroisdism are weight gain, tiredness, exhaustion, mood swings, increased sensation of cold, dry skin and hair loss. Fortunately, these symptoms of an underactive thyroid can usually be alleviated or made to disappear with optimal treatment.
A thyroid dysfunction, in particular hypothyroidism, can also stand in the way of an existing desire to have children. In these cases, as well as during pregnancy, an optimal setting of the thyroid function is very important for the development of the child!
An overactive thyroid, also called hyperthyroidism, can lead to symptoms such as racing heart, sweating, nervousness, restlessness, weight loss and hair loss. Typically, hyperthyroidism is caused by Graves’ disease or so-called “hot” nodules, but there are also less common causes. For optimal treatment, it is important to first make an accurate diagnosis. Hyperthyroidism can usually be treated with drug therapy; in rare cases, surgery or radioiodine therapy is necessary.
The incidence of thyroid nodules increases with age. Although most thyroid nodes are benign, malignant nodes (thyroidcancer) must be detected as early as possible in order to initiate successful and gentle therapy. An ultrasound examination is often sufficient for this clarification, but in some cases scintigraphy is also required as an additional imaging procedure.
Fortunately, cure is also possible in the vast majority of cases of thyroid cancer! Optimal aftercare is necessary to avoid a relapse or to detect it as early as possible. I will be happy to assist you with my many years of experience.
